10042004 Entry: "for some reason"

for some reason, the fact that i checked my mom's voter registration status and it said "unaffiliated" gives me hope. here i thought she was merely tolerating my sometime tirades in my sister's direction as she naively, 18-ly, Young-Republican-Brainwashing-ly asserted her party affiliation. (i give her until about age 21; it'll all change). i thought mom only sat idly by because she realizes i'm a handful and i don't listen to anything besides a "sure, you're right" in such a situation.

but no, my mother is unaffiliated. and that makes me happy. it means there's something going on in there. it means that she's thinking about issues. it means that she's not just registered according to her income or what her family decided. she's a free agent, waiting to be turned to the best offer available. not bought. options open.

i'm a registered Democrat, but i honestly don't feel myself as such. i'm lots of different things that i shan't go into now. this isn't a post about politics.

so anyway, my realization about my mother has made me happy. it's made me think that she's a grownup and that maybe, finally, i will be allowed to grow up, too. my siblings have always benefitted from my battles with our parents. from curfew to cars to allowances to college, i have debated my way into what i got and what i have.

maybe this is a political post. i've struggled to secure my freedom. everyone does. do your part. and call your mother some time.

Actually, I was registered Independant until this year, because I didn't really want to associate with either side--neither truly spoke to me. This year, I realized that if I'm not either...I don't know, it just didn't make the right statement to the people in charge. "Silence equals complicity". So, I spoke out against the people in power by switching to the other side. Watching the DNC--hell, volunteering at the DNC--I saw the America I love--the America I want to believe exists--represented. I don't see that in the Republican party. As for Melis, once she travels outside of that Eastern NC box a bit more, you're right, she'll figure it out!

i see where you're coming from on this one. i'm still working on my mother. it's not so much that she's FOR republicans or anything, but more that she's not for either. hm.
