07212004 Entry: "acute memory"

i record, in my brain, our relationship with its own over-dubbed soundtrack. like the time, last fall, we bought Liz Phair's Whip-Smart on the discount rack at a book and music consignment shop. he also bought me a copy of the The Thief of Always and i was thumbing through it as Chopsticks started playing.

it isn't the subject matter that was pertinent, but the kind of throbbing repitition to the piano and Liz's voice matched the dark, chilly, rain that was falling as he pulled the car back onto the road, then making a left at a stop sign.

we drove to a mall parking lot and sat there, staring, with the music low, talking about something that blurs in my ears, but brightens the looks on his face as i focus on the moment. he was smiling sideways at me as the windows fogged and the rain drummed softly.

i get so glad that this is for always.
